Break up foreign monopolies! China has for the first time achieved its own large-scale production of advanced nuclear-grade zirconium materials

The first batch of products of CF3 nuclear fuel component N36 zirconium material, developed independently by China national nuclear corporation (CNNC) to meet the requirements of third-generation nuclear power, have been successfully rolled off the production line and passed acceptance. This marks our country breaks the core technology link that foreign country monopolizes for a long time, take another solid step on the road of large-scale application. Fuel assembly is the core of nuclear reactor, its safety and reliability depend on zirconium cladding to a large extent.

Zirconium alloy material is the key structural material of nuclear reactor core, as the "skeleton" and "skin" of fuel assembly, zirconium alloy is called the "first safety barrier" of nuclear reactor, which is very important for the safe and stable operation of nuclear power plant, and is one of the important indexes to evaluate the research and development level of fuel assembly. For a long time, zirconium alloy materials used in fuel assemblies of nuclear power plants in China basically rely on imports. Zirconium alloy materials have become a major bottleneck restricting the development of China's nuclear fuel industry and a major weakness of the nuclear fuel industry.

In order to eliminate the bottleneck and make up the shortage, in 2010, CNNC launched the key scientific and technological special research on "design technology of pressurized water reactor components", and made it clear that CF3 took N36 zirconium alloy, a new cladding material, as the breakthrough, and N36 zirconium alloy tube rod research was the main research content of the special research.

Eight years, China's nuclear power through six stages of technical research, successfully mastered the complete with independent intellectual property rights N36 zirconium alloy engineering preparation technology, for the first time since 2012 into the heap, through multiple batches characteristic components, the forerunner of pile with running test and check with the pool, proof performance is excellent, fully meet the design requirements, with the mass application conditions.
