Why does China belong to a country with scarce zirconium resources?

The global zirconium resources are concentrated in Australia and South Africa. The majority of the world's zirconium deposits are in Australia and South Africa, accounting for 83 percent. China's zirconium reserves are only about 500,000 tons (calculated by ZrO2), accounting for 0.6% of the global reserves, which is a country with scarce zirconium resources.

China's zirconium resources are mainly distributed in Inner Mongolia and hainan, accounting for 70 percent and 19 percent respectively, China mining reported. The main deposit type is zircon placer (94% of the total ore area), distributed in hainan and guangdong regions, followed by rock ore deposits, mainly distributed in Inner Mongolia region, due to its difficulties in mineral processing has not yet been mined.

Global zirconium reserves have not increased in recent three years. According to USGS data, the global zirconium storage capacity remained unchanged (revised) at 75 million tons in ZrO2 from 2014 to 2016.Australia had reserves of 51 million tons in 2014-2015 and 48 million tons in 2016.
