Breakthroughs have been made in the research and development of high strength and toughness porous titanium alloy artificial bone materials

Recently, the 863 project project "research and development of high strength and toughness porous titanium artificial bone material (2015AA033702)" undertaken by institute of metals, Chinese academy of sciences and other institutions passed the technical acceptance. The high strength and toughness porous titanium alloy artificial bone material developed in this project provides a new approach for the clinical treatment of large bone defect repair in the future.

Bone defect is a common disease in orthopedics and maxillofacial surgery, which is caused by trauma, infection, tumor resection and so on. Broke through new Gao Jiangren porous titanium alloy structure of the subject design, precise preparation technology, and combining the titanium alloy material manufacturing technology, electron beam in situ preparation of barium titanate piezoelectric ceramic surface treatment technology and ultrasonic treatment in vitro technology, developed a porous titanium alloy artificial bone material that could satisfy the requirement of bone tissue repair.

At present, the porous titanium alloy artificial bone material developed in this project has passed the biocompatibility test. The porous structural orthopaedic products, such as intervertebral fusion cage and femoral head support bar, were evaluated in animal experiments, and compared with the control group, the repair efficiency of bone tissue defects was significantly improved (20%).Two products of acetabular cup and porous intervertebral fusion cage with bone trabecular surface structure have passed the registration test of the state food and drug administration and entered into clinical trials.

Bone repair biomaterials are important research directions in biomedical materials. The successful research and development of new high strength and toughness porous titanium alloy artificial bone repair materials has laid a solid foundation for the development of bone repair biomaterials and related equipment industry with independent intellectual property rights in China.
